CNET reports that Qwest Communications customers can now recieve Qwest DSL service without subscribing to thier phone service. According to CNET...

"Qwest Communications customers will no longer be forced to buy local phone service when they sign up for DSL, the company said on Wednesday.

Starting Feb. 28, customers throughout Qwest's mountain and western territories will be able to buy digital subscriber line (DSL) service regardless of whether they have a voice phone line with Qwest or not. Qwest is the first Baby Bell to offer such an option on a wide-scale.

"Forcing them to take a voice line is driving them to the competitor," Qwest Chairman Richard C. Notebaert said recently. "As long as we can make money at it, we should do this. Every time someone fights progress, at end of day they aren't successful."

Can you have DSL without phone service?

YES
DSL without phone service has been available for quite sometime, but until recently it had to be purchase from a non-RBOC provider such as LaunchNet or Speakeasy ( OneLinK ). Now the Baby Bells are coming on line and offering "Unbundled DSL". Qwest was the first with their no phone service DSL. Watch for the others to offer unbundled DSL or naked DSL soon.

Stictly speaking, yes, there is a physical line to connect you to the provider, but no, that line does not have to carry telephone services. It can be used for DSL only. These services are refered to as "Naked DSL" or "Unbundled DSL". Also available are Cable Internet and Satellite Internet. Cable will require a physical line to the Cable TV company. Satellite internet can be provided almost anywhere without a hard wire connection to the provider.
